General
FAQs
I'm new
to your studio, what do I need to know?
First
of all, a very warm welcome to Bikram Hot Yoga Southern Pines
- We hope that you enjoy our studio! The door opens 30 minutes
before class. Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes before
your first class to register and get settled. To help you
have the best experience, read our other FAQs and our Studio
Etiquette. If you have any questions, contact
Bikram Yoga or drop-by and say hello!
I'm on
the Intro Offer, may I come to every class?
Absolutely!
Please come as often as you can. The offer is there for you
to explore your practice in our yoga studio with our teachers.
Is the
Two Week Intro Pass better than a drop-in for first class?
One class
will not give you an understanding of what yoga is all about
or to allow you to experience all of our teachers and class
offerings. It can take a while to get used to the heat and
to start focusing on the sequence of postures. We strongly
recommend coming as often as possible in the first 14 days
to give yourself a chance to get used to the heat - Believe
it or not, some people come every single day! Discover your
practice. With a little determination and commitment, you
will begin to see all the benefits!
Can I
purchase an Intro Offer after my first class?
Sorry,
but the intro offer is only available before you buy your
first class.
Are there any yoga studio rules I should be aware of?
Yes. Both
Men's and Women's changing room have showers.
What
if I'm not flexible?
All the
more reason to come to class! You will be amazed how quickly
your flexibility can improve - The heated room provides a
safe environment to do this.
What
if I have a special medical condition or injury?
If you
have special medical conditions or injuries, please consult
your doctor first. And, please inform your teacher before
class.
Never
too old, never too late, never too bad to start from scratch
and begin again.
We welcome all students regardless of age and ability.
Should
I eat before class?
Not right
before class. It is recommended that you eat no heavy food
1 to 3 hours before class as all the compression postures
aren't much fun while your body's still digesting! FYI: This
includes bananas! A great fruit after class to replenish electrolytes,
but not before as bananas take a long time to digest.
If you haven't eaten much all day or are worried about blood
sugar levels, try a little bit of melon or some dark chocolate
before class.
You are
going to sweat so be comfortable. Women wear sports tops and
bottoms. Men wear swim shorts/yoga shorts with a t-shirt.
What
do I need for class?
2 Towels
(1 for beach towel for class, 1 for shower)
Bottle of water
Yoga mat
What
if I don't have these things?
We offer
rental towels and yoga mats. There's also a boutique with
clothing [men's and women's], mats, literature, water bottles,
and water for purchase.
Where
do I leave my personal belongings?
We have
lockers and the studio is locked during the class.
Yes! We
have easy, on-site parking and it's free!
Bikram
Yoga FAQs
What
is Bikram Yoga?
Bikram
Yoga is a style of Hatha yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury
which consists of a series of 26 postures practiced in a heated
room.
The heat
warms up your body allowing you to work into the postures
in a safer environment. The studio is kept at approximately
105°F (40°C) and 40-50% humidity. The combined heat
and humidity also promotes sweating, flushing toxins from
the body.
Do I
need to stay in the room for the full 90 minutes?
We urge
you to stay in the room for the full 90 minutes of every class.
Why is this important? The sequence is performed in a specific
way to work every part of your body and we want to make sure
you get the full workout. Challenge yourself to stay in the
room for the full class - including savasana [the final posture
of every hatha yoga practice] where you reap all the benefits
of your hard work!
Seriously?
Stay in the room the whole 90 minutes?!
Pace yourself
and you will do just fine! Don't try and squeeze all your
ambition into one class. In the beginning, the heat can be
the biggest challenge. Don't run away from that challenge
- Get your body acclimated to the heat. This can be one of
the hardest things to master, but once you get it you will
transform your practice.
What
if I want to attend class, but need to leave early?
Of course,
life happens and sometimes you have to leave early. This should
be the exception, not a regular occurrence. Please let your
teacher know before class if you must leave early and try
not to disturb your fellow yogis.
Will
it keep me fit, is it cardiovascular & can I lose weight?
Yes, yes,
yes! Whatever your fitness level, you will find Bikram Yoga
challenging. (That's why so many people come back for more!)
The yoga postures combine strength, flexibility and balance
to give you a total body workout. As with other forms of cardiovascular
exercise, regular practice will also aid weight loss.

What
if I've never tried yoga before?
Bikram
Yoga is for everyone. Each class is open to beginners and
follows the same format. It doesn't matter how well you do
each posture - What's important is that you try the right
way. Whether it is your first class or you have been practicing
for many years, every class presents a different challenge.
Bikram
Yoga is designed for all levels of fitness. The classes are
suitable for absolute beginners and more advanced students.
Make certain that you take your first few classes nice and
easy. Before you even realize, you will start enjoying all
the amazing benefits this wonderful yoga has to offer.
How long
do the classes last?
Each class
lasts 90 minutes, but don't worry - the class goes by so quickly!
Do I
need to drink a lot before and after class?
You're
going to sweat a lot - so it's important to be hydrated. Whether
you're in the "hot box" or not, it's recommended
to drink at least 2 liters of water every day.
Before class, we recommend that you drink 1/2 liter of water
an hour before class. That's enough to keep you hydrated during
class, but not so much that you feel bloated during the yoga
postures.
After class, it's also really important to get those lost
electrolytes back into your system. We offer a variety of
isotonic replacements including coconut water [which is a
fantastic and completely natural isotonic drink].
Some students find that drinking water with a pinch of Himalayan
pink salt, 2-3 squirts of lemon/lime juice, and a drop of
maple syrup before and after class can really help with hydration.
When
can I drink water during class?
In class,
we ask that you refrain from drinking for the first 4 postures.
This allows your body time to warm up. After that, you may
sip water between sets and postures.
Is it important to learn from a Bikram certified instructor?
Yes,
there is no substitute. We proudly have instructors who have
undertaken an intensive training in Bikram Yoga and have been
personally trained by Bikram Choudhury. Learn about our teachers.
